Education:

1982: DVM. Department of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine, Shenyang Agricultural University, Shenyang , Liaoning Province , China .

1985: MPVM in Preventive Veterinary Medicine. School of Veterinary Medicine , University of California , Davis , CA

1986: MS in Comparative Pathology. School of Veterinary Medicine , University of California , Davis , CA

Current Diagnostic Activities:

• Head of Avian Virology Section at the Animal Diagnostic Laboratory
• Providing supervision for daily operation of the avian virology section at Wiley laboratory
• Training laboratory staff and new personnel on their laboratory performance
• Conducting tissue cultures, molecular and monoclonal antibody-based assays and other diagnostic tests for isolation and identification of various avian viruses
• Coordinating Pennsylvania avian influenza (AI) surveillance program and conducting real-time RT-PCR for detecting AIV, H5 and H7 subtypes, paramixovirus type 1 (PMV-1) and variant of Newcastle disease virus (vNDV)
• Providing case coordinator for submissions of avian virology cases
• Developing new diagnostic tests and SOPs
• Manager of Wiley biocontainment facility to support diagnostic research and disease investigations

Research:

1) Development of molecular and monoclonal antibody-based diagnostic tests in avian virology as the following:
• Longitudinal studies of a Novel Dot-ELISA for detection of avian influenza virus (AIV), infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) and other avian viruses
• Development of group and H7 and H5 subtype specific monoclonal antibodies to Avian Influenza Virus
• Development of Multiplex RT-PCR for Avian Respiratory RNA Viruses including avian influenza virus (AIV), Newcastle disease virus (NDV), infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) and avian pneumovirus (APV)
• Development of standard RT-PCR and multiplex RT-PCR for AIV group, H5 and H7 subtypes
• Evaluation studies on S1 gene sequencing of infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) and development of S1 gene data bank to provide diagnostic services for genotyping characterization of IBV filed isolates, emerging new strains or variants.
• Development of Rea-time PCR for avian enteric viruses including fowl adenovirus (FAV), avian reovirus and rotavirus, turkey coronavirus and astrovirus, turkey/pheasant hemorrhagic enteritis virus (HEV), duck viral enteritis (DVE) virus, duck or goose parvovirus

2) Pathogenicity studies of new strains or variants of avian virus field isolates

3) Vaccine challenge studies of new strains or variants of avian virus field isolates

4) Diagnostic investigation and genotype characterization of infectious bronchitis virus (IBV)
